Traditions ~ Part 1

Our Church is steeped with them..We do a lot of things just because our grandparents did it…because that’s how we were taught but are they all Biblical and do they all bring us in closer relationship with God, our ultimate goal?

Mark 7:6-8

“He replied ‘Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.  They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’  You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men”

Verse 6

He replied “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”

God desires our hearts.  He wants people that will worship Him with everything, actually live out what they say with their mouths.  He doesn’t want just lip service from us.  He wants us to worship in spirit and in truth.  If we just say it, but don’t live it we are not in the truth. He desires more, calls for more, requires more.  Ask yourself these questions and really think about it.  Does God have my heart? Am I giving Him everything or am I giving way to tradition?  Am I living what I preach? Am I giving God lip service?  These are serious questions every believer must ask themselves.  We come to a point in our walk were we don’t see any results.  We work but don’t see any fruit from our labor.  Is it because we are just working because it’s the right thing to do?  Is it because we’re working because tradition tells us we must?  Our goal is not to work and toil just to get the work done.  It is truly to give God glory and when we realize that we will see the fruit we desire.  We will see the breakthrough we desire in every area of our lives.  Our focus must be God in all things.  When we focus on God everything else will and does fall into place.

Lord don’t let my work be mere lip service to You!!!! That is definitely my cry. Tell me, are you giving God lip service???

What do you think?

This past weekend was the best weekend of my life. I, as the Girls Youth Leader at New Life International Fellowship, got a chance to partake in the process of seven girls realizing their freedom in Christ. Jesus came to heal us of all of our ailments-mentally, physically, and spiritually – and when we actually come to the point where we allow Him to do His total work in us the result is unbelievable. Going through this weekend and speaking on several topics brought me back to the place where God showed just how loving He can be and how mindboggling total freedom truly can be!!

That weekend was a testament to just how awesome God is and how pertinent it is to truly give all of your burdens to God and walk in His light. I look back over the last 4 years of my life and can’t even believe all that I have done and accomplished with the power of God. He set me free of my insecurities about my weight; subsequently I’ve lost 40lbs and am still losing with a focus on treating the temple He has given me with the respect it’s due (1Cor6:19-20). He set me free of worrying about the uncertainties of my path and purpose, subsequently I’ve gotten my masters in Public Health (practically for free mind you) and am looking for PhD program to suit my desires (His desires). He showed me my worth, and subsequently I can’t help but to tell every woman I know about Him and their worth. Living in freedom is amazing.

Jesus quoted Isaiah and said in Luke 4:17-20

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor… Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

He came, died on the Cross, and rose again on the third day so that we can live a life of total freedom. He did all that He did so that we can walk in freedom and not be tied to the bondages this world has placed on us. God is sooooo amazing and His love for us is immense. Bondages of disease, of past hurts, of physical nature (food, drugs, alcohol, sex etc)- He died so that we can see freedom from all of that. He wanted to trade our ashes for His beauty (Isaiah 61: 3)…for the beauty He promised through the Cross. Will you accept that? Will you allow Him to totally free you and set you on a path of success no MAN can stop? I have and the ride has been absolutely amazing thus far. God has truly set me free and though I still struggle in different things (as we all do) a true understanding of His grace, love, and purpose for me keeps me striving!! I thank God for the Hope He has given me. Tell me, what has God freed you from? What do you think of when you hear the words of the Prophet Isaiah foretelling what Jesus would do for each and every one of us?

Are you zealous?

…For he was as zealous as I am for my honor among them, so that in my zeal I did not put an end to them.” Numbers 25:11

We must be zealous for what HONORS God.  We must fiercely defend truth.  We must fiercely defend our God’s HONOR.  Whatever brings Him HONOR we must fiercely pursue.

1 Sam 2:30 “…Those who HONOR me I will HONOR, but those who despise me will be disdained.”

1 Cor 6:20 “You were bought at a price.  Therefore HONOR God with your body.”

The Israelites at this time were sinning against God with the Midianites.  They were worshipping other gods and doing all types of debauchery but one guy was big and bold enough to walk right in front of Moses and the assembly with a Midianite woman after God had rebuked everyone for their sin.  Now here is where the story gets crazier!  Phinehas, a son of one of the priests, saw all this craziness. He followed them right into the guy’s tent and killed them both.  With that God stopped the plague He seized the people with…

Now I’m not saying we need to go out and kill people for their sin because if thats the case, if we are still under the law (which we are not; we’re under grace ~Romans 6:14) all of us would be guilty (Romans 3:23).

What I AM saying though, is that we must be bold for the things that HONOR God. We must be so zealous that we stop at nothing to remove from among us, from within us anything that does not HONOR or PLEASE the Lord who saved us.  “Whatever is true…noble…right…pure…lovely…admirable” (Phil 4:8) think on those things and honor God with those.  “Put to death…whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires,…greed…(Col 3:5).

Paul  was like that. He went about the business of removing everything except the Cross of Christ; in Jesus and Him crucified(1Cor 2:2).  He fought fiercely for the TRUTH God laid before him and would not allow anything else.

But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! Gal 1:8

It’s all about God’s truth and honor. It’s all about Jesus and Him crucified (1Cor 2:2). What are you zealous for today?
